A Cobblestone Alley Framed by Edo-Period Earthen Walls
Furue Alley is a historic cobblestone lane lined on both sides with dirt walls, preserving much of the atmospheric charm of Edo-period Chofu.
Built originally for defensive purposes, these unique earthen walls feature raised stone bases and lack the smooth plaster finish typical of residential walls. The street layout reflects this defensive design: rather than a simple grid, the paths form frequent T-junctions and maze-like turns to disorient potential invaders.
Planted behind the earthen walls, Japanese maple trees peak out from private gardens, offering travelers vibrant greenery in spring and brilliant foliage in autumn.
As one of the few places in Shimonoseki where traditional kimono blend seamlessly into the surroundings, the area features kimono rental shops, tailoring services, and affordable secondhand clothing boutiques throughout the neighborhood. On weekends and during cooler seasons, you will often see locals and tourists strolling the historic streets clad in elegant traditional dress.
