The clear stream of Chofu Castle Town

The Dangu River flows gently through the heart of the castle town, dividing it into two scenic areas. Along its banks, traditional townscapes blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the riverside. In the lower reaches of the river, ducks and carp can be seen swimming gracefully. The riverbank is renowned for its seasonal beauty—vibrant cherry blossoms and irises in spring, lush hydrangeas in early summer, and brilliant maple leaves in autumn. The path along the river also serves as the approach to Kozanji Temple, leading visitors straight to its grand main gate.
Dotted along the riverbank and neighboring streets are a variety of unique, charming shops. Housed in renovated traditional machiya townhouses and historic homes, these establishments include Japanese restaurants, souvenir shops, handcrafted goods and daily necessities boutiques, cozy cafes, antique stores, and studios for local creative artists. It is a delightful area to explore on a leisurely stroll.
