Suhōtei Festival | 数方庭祭

One of Japan’s "Extraordinary Festivals" Alive in Castle Town Chofu

"Chanko-hoi-hoi, don-pa-pa! Chanko-hoi-hoi, don-pa-pa!"

As the rainy season comes to an end, the rhythmic sounds of festival music begin to echo through the streets of the castle town. This catchy phrase captures the energetic practice beats of local children rehearsing for the Suhotei Festival.
The Suhotei Festival is a sacred ritual held every evening from 19:00, August 7 to 13, at Iminomiya Shrine. Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Yamaguchi Prefecture, its origins trace back 1,800 years to the 14th Emperor, Chuai, who celebrated his victory over an evil spirit.
It is widely celebrated as one of Japan's "Extraordinary Festivals" (Tenka no Kisai) for its dynamic spectacle: heroic men clad in white robes and headbands wear thick padded waist guards as they hoist massive Moso bamboo banners—some up to 30 meters high and weighing 100 kilograms—and circle the sacred "Demon Stone" (Oni-ishi) three times. Each year, tens of thousands of spectators gather in this historic town to witness the thrilling event.
The crowd erupts in applause as young men valiantly balance the giant banners, offering an unforgettable scene. While it has long been a cherished neighborhood tradition with modest external recognition, the festival’s online and social media presence has fueled its popularity. Today, photoseekers, domestic tourists, and international visitors arrive in increasing numbers to experience the magic firsthand.
While Shimonoseki hosts other notable celebrations like the Sentei Festival and the Genpei Battle Festival, the Suhotei Festival holds a special charm. Donning a finely tailored yukata (cotton kimono) to watch the banners sway against the summer night breeze offers a truly evocative experience.
