A Historic Temple of Quiet Elegance in the Castle Town of Chofu
Kakuon-ji is a peaceful Obaku Zen temple tucked away in the castle town of Chofu. Built by Mori Tsunamoto, the 3rd feudal lord of the Chofu Domain, it serves as one of the official family temples of the Mori clan. Its grand irimoya-zukuri (hip-and-gable roof) main hall stands as a testament to its prestige and rich heritage.
The grounds and surrounding area are designated as the historical site of the Wadokaichin mint, where Japan’s oldest official metallic coins were cast; excavated artifacts are preserved at the nearby Chofu Museum. The temple grounds also serve as the trailhead for Mount Juntei, featuring a hiking path lined with stone statues of the 33 Kannon Bodhisattvas of the Saigoku Pilgrimage.
Positioned precisely to the northeast (Kimon, or the "demon's gate") of the town center—in accordance with ancient tradition—the temple was likely built to ward off misfortune and protect the castle town. Though located a short walk from Chofu’s main tourist hub, its dignified atmosphere and refined charm rivals that of Kyoto’s renowned temples, making it a must-visit destination.
Throughout the year, the temple garden delights visitors with red plum blossoms in spring, fresh verdant greens in early summer, and brilliant autumn foliage. A small admission fee is requested as a voluntary donation depending on the season. Zazen (seated meditation) sessions are held every Sunday morning in the main hall. These sessions, alongside sutra copying (shakyo), are quite popular and require advance reservation. Please enjoy your visit quietly and respectfully.
